about

After coming to our attention as a member of Horsley and Aveyard’s ‘Four Stories’ string quartet Rebekah Okpoti debuts on Set Foot Press with a series of site-specific pieces taken from installation artworks installed during 2020. Based in Wilpshire, Lancashire, Rebekah is an Organist, Sonic Installation Artist and Music Lecturer.

The pieces on ‘Dressing’ have been composed to represent themes of domesticity within some of Lancashires unique church spaces including St Lawrence’s, Longridge and St George’s, Preston. Each track aims to study the features and fine details of a different space and exhibit the findings as sound with considerations relating to the architecture, dressings, lighting and embellishments. The tones, timbres and textures of the pieces are woven directly into the interior designs of the room.

As vast as the spaces that these pieces aim to reflect, Okpoti performs and makes use of an arsenal of instruments and sound sources including an 1893 Father Willis Organ, Violin, Piano and Cotton Looms. Lofty and elaborate strings reverberate, giving way to hushed and delicate found sound textures. ‘Dressing’ takes the concept of site-specific music quite literally from the grand altar to the cracks in the ceiling.
