about

Set Foot Press proudly presents a new collection of field recordings from North West based composer and audio artist Jon Aveyard. 'Shops, Trains and Leaves' combines Jon's practices of binaural audio recordings, listening walks and found sound improvisation across 3 select environments including Preston Train Station and Norwich Market.

On-site audio snapshots, Portraits of a place and time. Best enjoyed on headphones.

"The Nottingham Soundscapes were made using binaural microphones whilst walking through three different environments. Sometimes I performed the found sound sources around me (the leaves on the bushes, the fallen leaves on the ground, the leaves of the library books). Unlike the other two pieces on this album, mixing and montage has been used in places though the tracks are mostly unedited.

The Preston train station and Norwich Market tracks combine the practices of listening walks, free improvisation and binaural recording. Whilst recording using binaural microphones, I walked through selected areas choosing how and when to change pace and direction. Decisions about the routes were spontaneous but incorporated knowledge of timed events such as train arrival/departure schedules and clock chimes. There was an awareness of possible start and end points for the subsequent audio selection and this also influenced the ongoing decisions being made about the route.

Preston train station and Norwich market were selected because of the ease with which it was possible to move inconspicuously through them, the variety of sounds found within them, and the way in which the architecture of the spaces provides and denies sound separation."
